I drive my Rolls regularly to Florida and cross-country. It’s like
driving your living room. The leather seats don’t get any better.
The lumbar support is osteopathic! The weight of the car and its
suspension eats up the challenge of any uneven road surface. If I
didn’t need to fill gas or use the rest room, I could drive from
Philadelphia to Florida non-stop without fatigue. We often take our
shoes off and use the sheepskin floor mats on long trips. I think
the sheepskins also add to the acoustical quality of the car. I
improved the Alpine sound system with satellite radio. During one of
our trips I had the tread of a tractor-trailer’s tire peal off in
front of me. Massive pieces of truck tire pummeled the paint on the
hood of the car and the windshield, as I was moving at 75 mph
through the Carolinas. The windshield had minor scratches, as did
the paint. I was amazed at how the paint job held up. After
detailing with my orbital buffer and Maguiar’s: 1) body scrub 2)
cleaner 3) deep crystal polish and carnauba wax, the paint looked
better than the day I purchased her. I will not allow anyone else to
detail Lady Jayne. Detailing my cars with Meguiar’s is a joy and fun
exercise. I have been a Meguiar’s guy since the day I learned to
drive.
Lady Jayne does get the looks. My wife has a Corvette that turns
heads. There is a difference between turning heads and getting
looks. Getting the looks often means stares. Many times people
stare, almost mesmerized. Often times you can read lips saying,
“nice car”. Plus we get a lot of “thumbs up” when we’re on the
highway. Young children even point and smile. They don’t know what
they are looking at but they know they have never seen one before.
Filling gas invites people to come over and say, “What a beautiful
car!”
I have owned and driven a lot of cars. If I was the only guy left on
earth and had all the cars left on earth to pick from, I would chose
a Rolls Royce Silver Seraph to drive. Consequently, I believe it is
safe to say that “ego” has little to do with Lady Jayne. It’s safe
to say that I am a “car guy” who has grown into a connoisseur of
fine wine and automobiles. I simply like the best life has to offer.
Perhaps that is the James Bond inside of me. I am looking forward to
the new Bond movie “Die Another Day” even if he doesn’t drive a
Rolls.
People ask if I drive Lady Jayne every day. I don’t. However, I have
35,000 miles on her, and she was only two years old in June. I took
her to the gas station to fill air in the tires for a trip to
Florida. After filling air, I was at a stand still in the left turn
lane about 8 feet behind the car in front of me. There was a left
turn sign on the concrete island designating the turn lane. A
seventeen-year-old traveling in the opposite direction ran the red
light at an estimated 60 mph. The woman who had the green light hit
his rear quarter panel as he passed in front of her. This turned his
SUV sideways
and sent it coming directly at Lady Jayne. I saw the
impact, covered my eyes and ducked. The left turn sign steel pole
stopped his SUV from rolling into me but the pole was sheered off
and came air born into my windshield. When I looked up I was covered
with slivers of windshield glass. The windshield held up after the
massive impact of the pole and saved me from possible injury or
worse. The entire inside of the car was strewn with shards of glass.
I pulled over into the gas station to assess the damage. The paint
job had minor scratches from broken glass and there were some minor
dents in the grill from flying debris but amazingly there was no
body damage! The windshield deflected the pole over the top of the
car and onto the road behind me. If the windshield caved in, well…
perhaps I should drive Lady Jayne everyday…. for safety.
My Rolls Royce is a classy lady and she looks out for me. My lady,
Lady Jayne, keeps me safe. The stories and the memories make her one
of a kind and more than a “plain Jane”, she’s a special “Jayne”,
like my dear departed friend. I feel a little bit like James Bond
when I drive her, but for now I think I will “Die Another Day”.
PS. I can’t say enough about the service at Frank Kerbeck. Ralph
Brumbaugh, the service manager, is honest, straightforward and kept
me up to date as the parts came in to repair my car. The guys in the
shop and the detail department made the car new again. My shattered
dream is now back together as one beautiful car. Thanks guys!
